Delhi Govt Drops Plan to Scrap Old Cars and Bikes After Public Anger

New Delhi: The Delhi government has “put on hold” a controversial decision prohibiting fuel for “end of life” cars, which are defined as gasoline vehicles older than 15 years and diesel vehicles older than 10, in response to popular outrage.

Manjinder Singh Sirsa, the environment minister, told reporters that a fuel ban like this is hard to implement because of “technological challenges and complex sytems.” He also said that a system to confiscate poorly maintained vehicles is being developed rather than penalizing those who take care of their cars and motorcycles.

This comes after the ‘end of life’ (EoL) policy caused a great deal of public outrage.

The goal of the Commission of Air Quality Management decree, which went into effect on July 1, was to reduce vehicle pollution in the nation’s capital, where residents endure poor air quality throughout the year and work beneath a veil of deadly smog in the winter.

Based on data showing that vehicles are among Delhi’s top pollutants, the CAQM order had an impact on over 62 lakh vehicles, including cars, lorries, two-wheelers, and vintage automobiles.
