Gross GST Doubles in 5 Years

New Delhi: According to official data released on Monday, gross GST collections doubled in only five years, reaching an all-time high of Rs 22.08 lakh crore in the fiscal year 2024–25, up from Rs 11.37 lakh crore in FY21.

 In 2024–2025, gross goods and services tax (GST) receipts reached a record high of Rs 22.08 lakh crore, representing a 9.4% increase over the previous fiscal year.

 From Rs 1.68 lakh crore in FY24 and Rs 1.51 lakh crore in FY22, the average monthly collection increased to Rs 1.84 lakh crore in FY25.

 The number of GST-registered taxpayers has increased from 65 lakh in 2017 to over 1.51 crore in only eight years.

Revenue collection and the size of the tax base have both increased significantly since the goods and services tax was implemented.  According to a government statement on the eighth year of the GST, it has improved the efficiency and transparency of indirect taxation while also gradually strengthening India’s fiscal condition.

 With its highest-ever gross revenues of Rs 22.08 lakh crore in 2024–2025, GST saw a 9.4% year-over-year increase. The GST collections for 2023–2024 and 2022–2023 were Rs 20.18 lakh crore and Rs 18.08 lakh crore, respectively.  Gross GST receipts in 2021–2022 totaled Rs 11.37 lakh crore, with an average of Rs 95,000 crore collected per month.

On Monday, the GST, which was introduced on July 1, 2017, marks its eighth anniversary.

The GST simplified the tax system by combining around 17 local taxes and 13 cesses into a five-tier framework. In April 2025, monthly GST collection reached a record high of Rs 2.37 lakh crore. It was worth Rs 2.01 lakh crore in May 2025. On Tuesday, the June data will be made public.
